When OP Nayyar Shouted at Kishore Kumar in a Recording
The Musical Journey of Omkar Prasad Nayyar with Kishore kumar started with the movie, Baap Re Baap, which had Kishore kumar and Chand Usmani in the lead roles. The movie Baap Re Baap released in the year 1955. But the song where OP Nayyar shouted at Kishore kumar was from the 1972 released movie, Ek Baar Muskura Do.

Film Ek Baar Muskura Do had total eight songs, for which the male playback singers were Kishore da, Rafi Sahab and Mukesh Ji. The female lead singer was obviously Asha Bhosle, as OP Nayyar could think of a second female playback singer, apart from her.
Five songs in the film were sung by Kishore kumar and 1 song each by Rafi Sahab and Mukesh Ji. It was after the success of Aradhana, Kishore kumar became a very busy singer after shifting his profession from an actor to a full time playback singer.
Kishore da recorded the first four songs perfectly but the fifth song was still left. When Kishore da found that the song had deep classical touch in it, he asked OP Nayyar, why he wanted Kishore kumar to sing this song, when Rafi sahab was available and had sang a song for the movie. OP Nayyar, what plans he had nobody knew, said, ’No Kishore, this song is for you. You have to sing it.’ Kishore Kumar agreed and asked for a day to prepare for the song. OP Nayyar agreed and asked him to come the next day for recording.
But surprisingly, the next day when Kishore da started to record the song, one or two lines hardly he had sung, immediately from the other room OP Nayyar shouted and said, ‘Kishore, Yeh Sahi Nahi Ho Raha, Tum Besura Gaa Rahe Ho.’ And it happened couple of times. The third time when again OP Nayyar repeated the same words, Kishore Kumar lost his temper. Kishore kumar came out of the recording room and charged OP Nayyar directly, ‘If you think I am not able to sing the song, give it to some other singer, why do you want me in this song then? OP Nayyar made a rude statement that time, which Kishore da did not at all expect. OP Nayyar smiled shrewdly and said, ‘I don’t want you in this song, your relatives, Ram Mukherjee and Joy Mukherjee wanted you to sing this song.’

Kishore da felt very bad and took a break for some time in the studio. After a break of around 30 minutes Kishore da again started to record the song. But this time, before the recording got started, Kishore da warned OP Nayyar not to make any comments while the song is getting recorded. ‘After the recording gets over, you may decide whether to keep the song in the movie or not’, said Kishore kumar. Kishore Da recorded the full song in one take and when he came out, surprisingly everybody including OP Nayyar started clapping for Kishore kumar.
OP Nayyar came forward and hugged Kishore kumar. Kishore da could not understand what exactly was happening. OP Nayyar smiled and said, ‘I purposely told you Besura, in order to make this song more effective. And see, after my words had hurt you, you implied that pain and sentiment in the song, which was very much needed in this song as per the situation of the scene.’
Kishore Kumar smiled back and immediately left the studio that day. The song remains as one of the best songs of Kishore Kumar with a classical touch, ‘Savere Ka Suraj, Tumhare Liye Hai.’ Though the most successful song of this movie was, Roop Tera Aisa Darpan Mein Na Samaye & Kitne Atal The Tere Iraade, but to any Kishore kumar fan or any music lover, this is such a melodious song, which when you listen to it keeping your eyes closed, will give you Goosebumps anytime.
